I suggest that you follow the two day itinerary
but add the following into your schedule where appropriate. It's
best to adjust the actual schedule you follow to coincide with closing
times of various museums on certain days or for example, to try and make
a Saturday or Sunday breakfast at Estela's Restaurant:
Today take bus
Route
7. Catch it on So. Alamo St. at the corner of Blum and So.
Alamo St., at the corner of Dillards at Alamo Plaza in front of the
Menger Hotel. You want to catch it going north bound. It
will take you to the following attractions:
You certainly can't visit all of these places so choose selectively what
you prefer. Even if you don't visit any one place it's a very easy
and inexpensive way to see them from the outside. Costs you 80
cents to ride, but for $2 get a one
day pass which allows you to unlimited rides for the day. The
pass is even good for the streetcar trolleys. If you don't want to
get the pass at VIA's office it
is also available at the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Witte Museum and
the Botanical Garden.
Also, I highly recommend a visit to the McNay
Art Museum. If you choose to go to the McNay you have several
choices depending upon whether you are going to any of the above
mentioned sites on Route 7. If you are going either to the
Botanical Garden or the Witte Museum you will want to take Route 7 as
far as the Witte. There get off and
catch bus for
Route
14 north bound to the McNay Art Museum. If instead you are NOT going to
the Botanical Garden then take Route 7 as far as the corner of
Hildebrand and Broadway (see the route maps). There change buses
and take Route 14 from Broadway St. going north bound.
If you are going to the McNay directly without stopping at any of the above
sites, you may wish to catch Route 14 from downtown and go directly to the McNay.
Make sure you ask the driver to tell you when you get there as the new
route goes off to the side of the Museum and it's not readily
discernible from the bus.
To return from the McNay to town catch Route 14 south bound and ride it all the way into
downtown.
Now having said all this, if you haven't yet seen the Institute
of Texan Cultures or the Buckhorn
Saloon you may want to do this instead of the above. Any of
these choices are good ones.
All this traveling and sightseeing should occupy your full day.
